The proposed A-to-G environmental rating system is a step towards greater transparency, especially as AI and cloud demand accelerate. Clearer reporting on energy use, water efficiency and emissions can help the industry show progress and give policymakers a better basis for decisions.

But if clean energy certificates can be sourced too broadly, there is a risk that ratings become easier to improve on paper than in the physical systems that support a facility. For a sector where power availability, grid capacity, water stewardship, and local resilience are already under pressure, that distinction is important.

Sustainability cannot be reduced to a certificate strategy. It must show up in how sites are selected, how power is procured, how cooling is designed, how waste heat is reused, and how facilities integrate with the local grid.
